Overview

Machu Picchu is sold out for your dates — and it’s peak season. We’ve got you.

If you’re traveling in July, August, or September — or around Fiestas Patrias, Holy Week, or school holidays — official Circuit 2 tickets vanish months ahead. On these high-demand dates, Peru requires passport pre-registration two days before entry. That’s why this is a 3-day tour, not two (2-Day Tour): the extra day is what guarantees you walk into Machu Picchu when everyone else gets turned away.

Booked direct with a local Cusco operator. Hotel included. Real guides, real people — no middlemen, no reseller markup.

WHY 3 DAYS?

During Peru’s peak dates, the government limits daily in-person Circuit 2 tickets and requires advance passport pre-registration. The process runs across three days:

  • Day 1 — Travel to Aguas Calientes and pre-register your passport (secures your place in the pickup queue).
  • Day 2 — Collect your official Circuit 2 entrance tickets. The rest of the day is yours.
  • Day 3 — Guided visit to Machu Picchu, then return to Cusco.

Trying to compress this into two days on a peak date is how travelers end up without entry. The third day isn’t padding — it’s your guarantee.

Need to Know

The 1% scenario — high-demand dates On most days, this tour runs without complications. However, on Peruvian national holidays and certain high-demand periods, more visitors than expected may show up for the same limited ticket pool. If all 500 daily Circuit 2 tickets are exhausted before your registration is processed, you will have two options:

  1. Accept a Circuit 1A (Machu Picchu Mountain), 1B or Circuit 3A (Huayna Picchu) or 3B ticket to keep the tour on schedule for Day 2.
  2. Visit Machu Picchu on Day 3 with your Circuit 2 ticket.

In either case, we will do everything in our power to alert you in advance. Additional hotel costs for a potential third night are the traveler’s responsibility.

Known high-demand dates: Holy Week (Semana Santa), the week of July 28 (Peru’s Independence Day), mid-August, mid-October school breaks, and mid-December graduation season.

Early entry time — train change If your assigned entry time is very early, it may be possible to change your return train to an earlier departure. This must be arranged in person at the Aguas Calientes train station. The train company may charge a 10% fee plus fare difference. Note: if you change to an earlier return train, the door-to-door hotel transfer in Cusco is forfeited and you’ll need to arrange your own taxi.

Luggage The train only permits carry-on-sized luggage. Do not bring large checked bags. Leave extra luggage stored at your hotel in Cusco.

Entry time is not guaranteed Entry times are assigned at the moment of ticket pickup and are based on daily demand. We cannot pre-select or modify your entry window.

Departure point: Your hotel in Cusco (pickup included)

Return point: Your hotel in Cusco (door-to-door transfer included on Day 2 return)

Altitude: Machu Picchu sits at 2,430 m (7,972 ft). Cusco is at 3,399 m (11,152 ft). Most visitors feel more comfortable at Machu Picchu than in Cusco. Minor shortness of breath is normal during the citadel walk.

FAQs

Why is this tour 3 days when the standard last-minute tour is 2?
Down arrow icon - Xplore Cusco Up arrow icon - Xplore Cusco
Because on peak dates (July–September, Fiestas Patrias, Holy Week, school holidays) Peru requires passport pre-registration two days before entry. The extra day is what guarantees your access.
I'm traveling outside peak season. Do I need this?
Down arrow icon - Xplore Cusco Up arrow icon - Xplore Cusco
Probably not — our 2-Day Last-Minute Tour covers you for regular dates. This 3-day version is built specifically for high-demand periods.
Can I add Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain to this tour?
Down arrow icon - Xplore Cusco Up arrow icon - Xplore Cusco
Yes, on most days. When you pick up your Circuit 2 ticket, our staff will help you request an additional Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain ticket at the same time — for 200 PEN per person (cash, Peruvian Soles). We recommend requesting the mountain ticket for an earlier slot and scheduling your Circuit 2 entry 4 hours later. This isn't possible on extremely high-demand days when the Cultural Center limits visitors to one ticket each.
What happens if my entry time is very early in the morning — can I change my return train?
Down arrow icon - Xplore Cusco Up arrow icon - Xplore Cusco
Possibly. Train schedule changes must be handled in person at the Aguas Calientes station. The train company may allow it based on availability, typically with a 10% change fee plus any fare difference. If you change trains, you'll lose the included transfer to your hotel in Cusco and need a taxi.
Is the guide private or shared with other groups?
Down arrow icon - Xplore Cusco Up arrow icon - Xplore Cusco
Your guide is private to your group. You won't be merged with strangers.
What if I need to cancel less than 72 hours before departure?
Down arrow icon - Xplore Cusco Up arrow icon - Xplore Cusco
Unfortunately, no refund is possible with less than 72 hours notice. Train and bus tickets for this route are non-refundable, and the logistics — guide, bus to entrance, taxi, station transfers — are pre-committed. We strongly encourage purchasing travel insurance that covers trip cancellations.
Why is this sold as a complete package and not just the entrance ticket?
Down arrow icon - Xplore Cusco Up arrow icon - Xplore Cusco
The Peruvian government allows last-minute tickets to be sold in person in Aguas Calientes specifically to benefit the local community — ensuring that some of the revenue from Machu Picchu stays in the town that hosts it. As part of that arrangement, these tickets are bundled with services from local guides and local bus operators. This isn't a markup — it's the structure required to access this ticket type.
What's my entry time going to be?
Down arrow icon - Xplore Cusco Up arrow icon - Xplore Cusco
We don't know in advance, and neither does anyone else — it's determined at the moment of ticket pickup based on daily demand. In low season, 9:00 AM is common. In peak season, expect 11:00 AM. On the busiest days, 3:00 PM is possible. Your guide will coordinate with you regardless of which time you receive.
