Overview
Circuit 1C – The Sun Gate Route is one of the most symbolic and panoramic trails in the Machu Picchu Sanctuary. It leads to the Inti Punku, or Sun Gate, the ancient ceremonial entrance to Machu Picchu used by Inca pilgrims arriving from the Inca Trail. This route combines the upper terraces of the citadel with a moderate high-altitude hike along the original Inca pathway that connects to the surrounding mountain ridge.
The trail begins near the Guardian’s House in the upper sector (shared with Circuit 1B) and follows a gradually ascending stone path that winds above the terraces and through native Andean vegetation. Along the way, visitors enjoy magnificent views of the citadel, the Urubamba River valley, and the surrounding peaks of the Vilcabamba range.
Reaching the Sun Gate (Inti Punku) at approximately 2,720 meters (8,924 feet), visitors stand at the very point where travelers of the Inca Empire would first have seen the sacred city. During the June solstice, the sunrise aligns precisely through this gate, illuminating Machu Picchu — a phenomenon that demonstrates the Inca’s deep astronomical and spiritual knowledge.
After enjoying the viewpoint, the route returns along the same trail toward the main upper terraces and exits through the regular visitor path.
Circuit 1C is ideal for visitors seeking a moderate hike rich in history, symbolism, and scenery, offering one of the most memorable vantage points in the entire sanctuary.

If you have to choose between 1B and this circuit, this is definitely the best option, it has incredible views and only those who do the Inca Trail can visit it, so it is worth it.
